So how did he get to the top of the pile?
1. Transitioning from producer to performing artiste
A lot of music buffs don’t know that Phyno actually started as a producer. He had made beats for his childhood friend, Runtown and fellow rappers, Mr. Raw and Ransome. He then decided to release his own effort, Shut down and kept at it.
2. Hooking up with Olamide
Phyno seemed to recognise early that Ibo rap has largely been a failed experiment in Nigeria. In linking up with Olamide, he identified the ‘king’ in the West, so he could use him as a platform sort of to sell his genre. And it worked a treat. Ghost Mode blew up the charts and is one of the most successful rap duet ever. They both have endorsement deals with Guinness and also released a joint album 2Kings on April 1 this year.
3. Sticking to Ibo rap
There’s been calls in some quarters for Phyno to add more English to his lyrics, but the Enugu indigene has turned deaf ears to them all and continue to dominate in the genre.
